Regarding Eligibility

Who is eligible to apply?
Visual artists working in all forms of media are eligible. The Studio Program is designed for artists with a developed studio practice. Applicants cannot be in a college or university degree-granting program. Certain types of work cannot be accommodated for practical reasons, including large or heavy sculptures, some types of metal work, and work involving high noise levels or fire risk. Artists must be citizens of the United States, or must be legal U.S residents during their tenure.

Can international artists apply?
Yes, as long as you are a legal U.S. resident during your tenure at EFA Studios, you may apply for membership.

Can I re-apply, if I am not accepted?
Applicants wishing to re-apply to EFA Studios may do so only after one year has passed from his/her previous application and only if an entirely new body of work is submitted.

Regarding the Application

When are the application deadlines?
The online application opens on October 3, 2023. All applications must be submitted online by or on December 3, 2023.

Is there an application fee?
No. There are no application fees required.

How do I know that the website successfully uploaded all of my information?
You will be prompted by the online application form to upload required files and information before you submit your application; our online application is designed so that you cannot submit incomplete applications. If there are any issues with the files that you have submitted, you will be notified by email. 

How do I know if my application has been received and is complete?
All applicants will be notified by email once their application is submitted. If something is wrong with your submission (such as corrupt files), someone will contact you via email for further assistance.

What kind of information should be in my Explanation of Work?
The Explanation of Work should be a brief summary, no more than 200 words, of the images or videos submitted for review. You may choose to include information on your particular artistic process and/or why you created this body of work.

If I miss this year's deadlines, is there another program I can apply for?
EFA Studios accepts membership applications once a year. On occasion, short-term studio space or shares become available in the building that may be rented on a month-to-month basis. Please visit our opportunities page for more information.

May I submit my application by email?
No. You may only submit an application by following the online application instructions. You may not email your application or images to EFA Studios.

May I submit my application by mail?
No. You may only submit an application by following the online application instructions and submitting the online application form. You may not mail in your application or images to EFA Studios.

When will I be notified of the result of my application?
All applicants will be notified by email or by mail by March 2024 of the outcome of their application. Please do not call the office for selection results.
