Screening: “Second Eulogy: Mind the Gap” by Billy Gerard Frank

Please join us for presentation of work from recent residents of the EFA North Fork Residency. Observing Long Island’s tidal waters, light, air, geology and time, Churchouse, Kjaer and Lejbach respond to impressions of the island’s unique environment, both built and natural. Coastal light, seashells, maps, waves, shadows, boulders, and wildlife are caught through camera lenses, rendered in sketch books, traced through rubbings, and transformed into works.

Cracked Ice by Del Geist
Public Art Installation

EFA Studios and The Garment District Alliance unveiled Cracked Ice by renowned artist Del Geist – a series of three towering structures made of stone and stainless steel titled Laurentide, Muir and Champlain that represent erratic boulders being held by immense ice-age glaciers. Located on the Broadway plazas in the Garment District between 39th and 40th Streets, the free installation invites viewers to reflect on the dynamic forces of nature and profound impact of climate change and will be available to the public through March 2024.

Woman, Life, Freedom: Discussion, Screening, and Artist Book Launch

To celebrate the first anniversary of the "Woman, Life, Liberty" movement led by Iranian women, who have resolutely said "no" to patriarchal and religious control over their bodies, EFA Studio Member Nazanin Noroozi will host an artist book launch, show and tell, and a panel discussion between Iranian and Afghan artists, activists, and dissidents who are fighting through words and works against totalitarian regimes.

Kosuke Kawahara: North Fork Report

EFA member artist Kosuke Kawahara presents White Noise, a 40-foot scroll drawing. Created during the EFA North Fork Residency in March 2023, the piece weaves a mysterious narrative connecting his studio at Manhattan to Long Island’s silence. Kawahara's work incorporates North Fork's nature, inspired by the retreat's calm seaside environment. The artist's multi-layered imagery reflects growth, decay, perception, and human behavior in shifting conditions.

Legacy Planning Seminar

The seminar focuses on developing studio practices to aid in legacy planning, covering systems for inventory, documentation, tracking, cataloging, and storage methods. "STOP BEING POOR!" by Jake Brush

"STOP BEING POOR!" is a short film created by Jake Brush at Wave Hill during Brush's New York Community Trust Van Lier Fellowship. The film relies on irreverent humor and reality television tropes to consider where power, class and beauty collide—at Wave Hill and in our culture at large.

No artist likes writing their statement but it is, as they say, a necessary evil. This talk will focus on the best ways to think about this unpleasant task. It will include practical strategies and rules to increase the likelihood of a successful finished piece, and discuss how this can become a useful exercise in thinking about your art.

About Deven Golden: A graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Deven Golden has been an exhibiting artist, museum curator, alternative gallery board member and chairperson of exhibitions, independent curator, art consultant, director of two galleries – one in Chicago, one in New York – and ran his own gallery in Soho and Chelsea. He has been a visiting artist/critic or guest lecturer at multiple universities and colleges, and taught professional practices at The School of the Art Institute and University of Illinois. He has curated over 30 exhibitions, and has been writing catalogue essays and reviews on a regular basis for various publications since 1984, including The New Art Examiner, Dialogue, Bomb, and www.artcritical.com. He is currently a contributing editor for www.artcritical.com and runs the blog www.artmonkeywrench.com. He lives in Brooklyn with his wife and daughter.

Adler, art critic and poet Barry Schwabsky, and Claire Gilman, Curator of The Drawing Center in New York City, as well as an interview with the artist by Xandra Eden, Curator of Exhibitions at the Weatherspoon Art Museum at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, offer new insights into Tegeder’s work.

CREATIVE AND SOCIAL CAPITAL: SOCIAL MEDIA STRATEGIES FOR ARTISTS

Description: Spend an evening learning about the broader field of social media - and how to get the most exposure for your work with a focused plan. Artist and arts administrator, Natalia Nakazawa, will elucidate key players in the critical art world online and discuss ways to engage with the larger dialogue. Dan Wong, will delve into the specifics of websites and an artist's enduring online presence, privacy concerns, how to measure your online efforts, alternate marketing strategies for artists, and best practices for your work and career.

Natalia Nakazawa (b. 1982) is a Brooklyn-based artist working in painting and installation. Nakazawa is programmed to mix signals and reconfigure meaning. Drawing upon a hybridized cultural background (Japanese, Uruguayan, American) and an incessant desire to travel (India, Brazil, Mexico) her images seek to capture the uncanny, juxtaposing unlikely objects together. Her work has been recently exhibited at The Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts (New York, NY), Flux Factory (Queens, NY), California College of the Arts (San Francisco, CA), PLAySPACE Gallery (San Francisco, CA), Casa de la Ciudad (Oaxaca, Mexico), Queens Museum of Art (Queens, NY), Topaz Arts Inc. (Queens, NY) and ISE Cultural Foundation (Soho, NY).

Dan Wong is Assistant Professor in the Department of Advertising Design and Graphic Arts, at the New York City College of Technology, CUNY. He directs the web design module and was responsible for the development of the program’s 10 web design courses. In 2012, Dan Wong received a supplemental Small Business Innovation Research grant from the National Science Foundation and spent 8 months working with students to innovate a mobile game application to promote and network creative professionals. Dan Wong received his Master of Fine Art (1997) from the Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, MI, specializing in sculpture. He also holds an AOCA (1995) from the Ontario College of Art and Design, specializing in Sculpture and Installation, and a BS in Psychology (1990) from the University of Toronto.

ARTIST LECTURE: MARIA ELVIRA ESCALLON

Maria Elvira Escallon is an artist-in-residence at EFA Studios: Partnerships with support from the Colombian Foreign Ministry. Maria's residency will continue through the end of December, 2013. 

Project Description: "About what has fallen from the Sky"

This artistic project aims to track the scattered fragments of Santa Rosa de Viterbo meteorite story and the scattered fragments of its material body dispersed in many Museums in the US and Europe. The Project includes a historical and scientific survey and a series of ink drawings on the different episodes of the story.

A large portion of the meteorite, which constituted the first piece of the National Museum's collection in Colombia, is still on view at this Museum. It is also the only piece in the entire museum that can be touched by the public. The other fragments of the meteorite and the story about what happened to that celestial body since it fell on 1810 have been dispersed.

At the same time that Maria is conducting historical research, she aims to visit libraries and museums in the U.S. that have fragments of the Santa Rosa´s meteorite in order to see and record them.

Historical Background: The meteorite fell on Holy Friday, 1810 (the same year as Colombian Independence from Spain), close to the small town of Santa Rosa de Viterbo. In 1923, Boussingault and Rivero, two eminent naturalists of the time, conducted a scientific expedition and bought the meteorite to the National Museum Collection.  However, due to its weight of approximately 650 kilograms, the meteorite could not be transported. The meteorite became a significant presence to the community of Santa Rosa and was placed in the main Plaza in front of the church on top of a Doric column, commissioned by the citizens of the town.

As well as talking about his book:"New Markets for Artists", Brainard Carey will also be talking about: getting into the Whitney Biennial, making an epic kickstarter project that brought in James Franco as a collaborator and got over-funded how to meet curators, seduce them, and get your art work funded and share it with the world the value of social media as it pertains to your art and well being.

Biography: Brainard Carey is the co- founder of the art collective known as Praxis which he created with his wife. Praxis is an internationally acclaimed art collaborative whose works have been featured in the Whitney Biennial, MOMA, PS 1 Greater New York, and The Reina Sofia and most recently in a solo show at The Whitney Museum.  Currently Praxis has several traveling shows in progress.  Brainard Carey also is the author two books for artists, "Making It In the Art World" and "New Markets for Artists"
