Video is a time-based medium, but the surface it's projected on is usually unchanging and static, itself not subject to the passage of time. The ice screen, on the other hand, melted away over a period of two days and a half, and as it did, it changed the quality of the image - the luminosity, texture, clarity, color - until it disappeared altogether.
The original video, 'Contours of Staying', was shot in 2004 and re-edited into a loop for the ice screen. Members of the group Falun Gong used to gather in front of the Chinese consulate on 42nd street in New York City to protest by meditating. On that day, there was a blizzard.
