Initially inspired by the scales that cover butterfly wings, early iterations of Kate’s recent work explores the innate calming and grounding physiological effects of biophilic patterns. Her work has since become a deep commitment and exploration of my very particular and peculiar process. Each painting begins with a unique grid that defines the rhythm and texture of the final pattern. Brushstrokes are laid down in a slow and deliberate manner; movements are rhythmic and repetitive.

The nature of the work has led to a curiosity about the psychological demands of such a tedious and laborious process, one that requires surrendering to time and viewing oneself more as a verb than a noun. Kate’s most recent work explores the textile-like quality of the paintings, as well as the similarity in process and labor inherent in mediums such as weaving, quilting, and embroidery. She has become curious about the (for better or for worse) long-associated attributes of kindness, social-activism and altruism with craft movements. As the artist Tracy Krumm explained, “Craft is a way of thinking about and making relationships with the world”. Kate’s own experience with such a labor intensive process has led her to ask whether there is a “self-expanding” quality to this type of work that leads to a greater sense of connectedness, belonging, and compassion. The Painted Weaving Series explores these ideas and pays homage to some of the inspiring histories and makers of these traditionally women’s disciplines that Kate deeply admires.
